Heron is a generic term for many species of birds belonging to different genera of the family Ardeidae.
They are wading birds of medium to large, characterized by a long neck and slender, bent "S", and an elongated and conical beak.
Herons live in wetlands, water bodies (lakes or ponds) and rivers. The word "heron" is attested in French since the fourteenth century. This term derives from the Frankish haigro, originally found in High German HEIG by means HEIG Flemish and Danish Hejre.
